Astrel-Instruments 8300B Camera ASCOM drivers - by: sonny486

I have been able to get from Astrel-Instruments the ASCOM drivers for the Camera / Filter (It has ver 2.7 KSTARS built in), however I don't know if I can use them with INDI-SERVER or Astroberry.

Anyone have any experience with this camera / filter?

I am using an iPad and VNC to connect to Stellarmate. However I can’t do basic inputs such as GOTO or type an odject to search. Do I have to have a keyboard and mouse to fully control things if on an iPad?

Meridian flip interrupted on EQMOD mount - Alignment Module? - by: Aurneth

The other day I set up a test of the meridian flipping on my EQ6 by setting up a quasi-dummy profile consisting of the following:

-EQMOD
-CCD Simulator

With that up and running, I set up a dummy exposure sequence of an object very close to the meridian - just a whole slew of 90s exposures. The Scheduler only has 'Track' selected in the Steps. So off it went taking dummy 90s exposures and once the >0.05h threshold was exceeded, the mount proceeded to flip after the completion of the dummy exposure it was on. So all is good and expected.

With some clear skies, I now made a real profile with the following:

-EQMOD
-CCD Simulator (I have an unsupported X-T1, so this is my workaround to be able to use scheduling - I just create a number of very long dummy exposures)
-ASI CCD (for an ASI120MM)

As I have a guidescope and guidecamera attached, the 'Align' and 'Guide' Steps are now also selected in the Scheduler.

But this time what happens is that the meridian flip is initiated and almost instantly halted. From the message window, I can tell that the Guider was halted when the flip was initiated. But something seems to have set off the Alignment module as it takes an image, determines the object isn't too far away and proceeds to recentre it before the meridian flip has actually taken place. On the Mount module, the Meridian Flip status changes to Inactive. Ekos restarts the Guider with a new calibration, then resumes taking exposures. All the while, the mount and camera continues to head for the tripod legs.

It first happened with M31, then I tried it with M33 with the same result. So I started a log with Scheduler, Alignment and Mount checked and tried again with NGC 752.

This is with KStars Build 2019-11-20T07:25:31Z running on an Astroberry server:

ZWO 8 Position Filter Wheel - *SOLVED* - by: NewfieStargazer

Just wondering why I am unable to assign filters to slots 6-8 on my ZWO 8 position filter wheel? I am running K-Stars/Ekos on Astroberry and only have the option for 5 slots on the filter wheel, despite it being an 8 position wheel, and being able to move through all eight positions.

QHY Driver: Testing required - by: Schwarze

Hello,
some time ago, I noticed that the temperature regulation for cooled QHY cameras is broken. It starts cooling, until the temperature is reached, and then stops measuring and regulating the temperature for the rest of the night.
Now I have build a patch, which does fix the issue, which works fine with my QHY8L camera. Before I submit a pull request, some more testing is needed. I think, following should be tested:
1. Does the change have any effect on non cooled why cameras?
2. Does the change have any effect on cooled, non regulated why cameras?
3. Does this issues exist on other cooled regulated QHY cameras, and if so, does the patch fix this too?

If you own a QHY camera and are willing to test, your help would be appreciated.

I can provide the compiled binary for 32 Bit ARM compiled on Astroberry 2.0 (Debian Buster...). It should run on raspberry 3 and 4 32 Bit, but I am not sure if it works on Ubuntu based distributions. But I could build one on a Raspberry Pi 3 running StellarMate if required.
For other architectures, I do not yet have a build environment, but at least amd64 and maybe i386 could be arranged.

For those who compile their INDI Library themselves here is the patch:

HEQ5 no-go with EQdir, only with PC Direct + handset... any ideas? [SOLVED] - by: rserpell

Hi everyone,
Sorry cause what follows is long, this little nightmares usually are...

I'm using a Raspberry Pi 4 to control a mount (Skywatcher HEQ5 pro) and two cameras (ASI 1600mm pro and ASI 120MM) over VNC (using Astroberry). The cameras are connected directly to the USB ports of the Raspberry and until recently I was using a USB to serial TTL converter to connect to the mount via the handcontroller (USB-TTL adapter -> DB9-RJ11 cable -> hand-controller -> mount). I had to try a couple of USB to serial adapters until I found one that worked (based on FTDI 232RL, this one ).

Unfortunately, connected as such I experienced two problems:
1- Guiding seemed erratic, particularly in DEC, sometimes jumping several arcseconds when only a small correction was due. After ironing out as much backlash as possible and seeing no improvement I decided to try guiding through the ST4 port instead of EQMod... It worked perfect! (and does it every time, no jumps, totally predictable, 0.55 asec RMS in RA, 0.45 RMS in DEC over 20 minutes).
2- Every now and then, pointing anywhere at the sky, INDI would complain briefly that the scope is out of limits (!). Other times it will disconnect out of the blue. This made guiding impossible even if using the ST4 port because upon reconnecting the driver would not activate tracking by itself.

I took this as a clear sign that I was better removing the hand-controller of the equation. I took the DB9 plug of my old cable and used one half of a CAT5 cable with its RJ45 plug to make a DB9 to RJ45 cable 1 meter long (following the pin-out shown on several websites). First try into the motor controller port: no go, nothing. Raspberry sees the adapter, adds device (ttyUSB0, as before), EQMod driver detects it, but no communication. I tried reversing TX and RX leads. Nothing. I thought maybe the adapter defaults to 3.3v levels and inexplicable that is enough for the hand-controller but not for the motor controller.

Bought me a FTDI 232RL breakout board (the kind that has a jumper to switch between 3.3v or 5v levels, like this one ). This time, before soldering anything I used a breadboard to provide temporary connections from the FTDI to another half of a CAT5 cable and try the setup. It worked! But: the motions lagged the commands significantly, most goto's would take several iterations to get to the target and the driver kept randomly complaining that the scope was out of limits. I thought (hoped) this was due to the bad quality of the connections provided by the breadboard as it hanged from the mount. I soldered the new FTDI adapter and CAT5 cable to make a definitive EQdir interface. In addition to not requiring the DB9 connection in between, given that the FTDI breakout is connected by a USB cable to the Raspberry, I cut the CAT5 cable to less than 10 cm so most of the new cable is a USB cord.

Unfortunately, this didn't work better. Connection was unstable, goto's were unpredictable, warnings all over the place. I left the mount unattended for 5 minutes and had to run back to it in horror when I heard the sound of the gears skipping as the scope was hitting the tripod :pinch: .

I rebuilt the DB9-RJ11 cable to try and use it as before. Also used it to update the hand-controller firmware from 3.39.05 to 3.39.10 (update that initially failed of course...).

I have attached two logs to this message, both from earlier today. The first is using the PC Direct mode, the second is using the FTDI 232RL to RJ45 cable. Now, I don't know if this is a coincidence or not, but today I was unable to observe any warnings using the PC Direct mode (this is after the firmware update). The log of the FTDI to RJ45 cable on the other hand is plagued by "read errors".

I'm puzzled...
- Would my problems be fixed if I go and buy a ready-made EQdir cable?
- Why does the USB to serial adapter work when used through the hand-controller and not when used to communicate directly with the motor controller?
- Is the motor controller of my mount the source of the communication problems? (but then, why would it work when driven by the hand-controller?)
- Faulty FTDI breakout board?

What do you think?

All the best,
Ricardo

Severe lag when streaming from camera - by: dpoulson

Hi,

Trying to get focus, but if I hit the stream button there is quite a bad lag (5-10 seconds) between what I do and what appear on screen. Obviously this makes it extremely hard to focus. :P Is this standard? The stream box says its getting approximately 11 fps, but I'm seeing more like one frame every two seconds.

This is from a ZWO ASI120, connected via USB3 to a Pi4, then over wifi to my laptop running kstars.

Cheers,

Darren.

Nikon D5100 short exposure issue - by: khobar

My Nikon D5100 works fine using the relay shutter release for long exposures, but now I want to do some flats and it just doesn't. Basically, I try to do 1/500, 1/1000, 1/2000, etc. and it always takes about 1 second. This is true whether I disable Force Bulb Mode or not.

I disconnected the relay, both ends, and now it won't take pictures at all, looking for /dev/ttyUSB0.

I have tried both the Nikon and gphoto drivers to no avail.

Thoughts?

Re:Installation KStars/Ekos Windows8 problem - by: Astrofriend

Hi,
I got KStars/Ekos running on my stationary Windows10 computer, works perfectly fine.

Now I also want to install KStars/Ekos on my Laptop Windows8.

First I got a warning that I missing the driver api-ms-win-crt-math-l1-1-0.

I updated the Windows8 but still it missing this DLL file, how it come ?

I downloaded both 32 and 64 bit drivers and store them in respective system folder.

After that I get a new warning, it could not start the programme correct and the error code '0xc000007b', something about over loading the computer when starting dll files.

I'm sure it has something to do with that I installed the math driver files manually, but how to instead when windows update don't do it ?

Dear all,

When I program a sesion with ligts and flats, i need to go to the telescope and put the t+shirt. But if it is a Large sesión with a lot of exposure If I have fallen asleep ekos show the Window to put the flat panel, but if you dont see the message ekos continúes taken pictures without the flat panel. For me can be a lot of interesting to change the behaivor, and if you can see the message ekos stop the sequence.

The are any posibilita for this?

Thanks

Big object file with QT-Creator - by: escriban

Hi all

Half a year ago I begun to develop a new driver for the DDM "AOK-Skywalker". The learning curve was rather steep, but I manged to produce a working INDI-driver for this mount and I'm quite a bit proud of it.

Latterly, when I cleared up some code, I noticed that the file produced with QT-Creator is 5 to 6 times bigger that the one compiled by Jasem. I suppose this has to do with the debug informations, that are build in.
Now what are the required settings to catch up with the size of the file in the repo?

Thanks for the hints

Problems with latest versions 3.3.7 and 3.3.8 - by: p1cass0

Hi, I've been running version Kstars v3.3.6 for a while and all works well. When trying the latest two Kstars versions I'm getting the error message "Failed to find astrometry.net bininaries". I can go back to v3.3.6 and everything works fine again. Can anybody advise why under 3.3.7 and 3.3.8 its complaining about the offline Astometry.net config when nothing has changed from 3.3.6.

Thanks.

Meridian flip interrupted on EQMOD mount - Alignment Module? - by: Aurneth

$

0

Mount park detection system - how? - by: universalmaster

Hi!

I'm trying to automate the observatory and I think the roof is working ok now and it seems to work also with ekos weather system. Here I am using an all-sky camera to just count starts and report bad weather if I see too few stars. All seems ok. I'm using a RPI 3 for ekos and kstars, but hopefully I can move to RPI 4 when Ubuntu starts stabilizing.

Now, my problem is that I can only physically close the roof if the mount is truly in it's parked position, otherwise the roof will hit the scope. The parked position is with the telescope to the west and pointing slightly downwards. The mount is an old eq6 fitted with synscan upgrade and controlled using eqmod.

My fear is, that something goes wrong with the mount and it is not truly parked, e.g. because it have bumped into the pier instead.

Any good ideas on how to design a reliable sensor system that will tell me if the mount succeeded in parking or not? I'm not a sensor wizard, so no idea what to look for. Programming it will be no problem....

Best regards
Søren

Problem with polar alignment in southern hemisphere? - by: wvreeven

Dear all,

Recently I moved from Spain to Chile and now I am trying to make use of the clear skies here. I have been setting up my astro photography gear for a few days in a row now for various tests and I noticed several times a problem with polar alignment. After the three images have been taken and the mount has rotated twice, the pink line is drawn to indicate how a star should be moved using the fine tuning knobs of the mount to improve the polar alignment. I notice that I need to aim the line such that the end point is on top of the star and the start where the star should end up. If I do this the other way around, the polar alignment will get worse. Has anyone else noticed this?

I have attached the logs of today's session for reference.

Pi4, USB3, and Wireless 2.4Ghz interference - by: dmsummers

Hello all,

Many here have seen my prior posted struggles with USB3, Pi4, and wireless. Finally, after a month+ of pulling my hair out trying to get my config to work right, I think I finally understand what is going wrong. Hopefully this note will help others avoid my experience. The long and short is that the Pi4's USB3 ports are jamming 2.4Ghz Wifi. What many suggest is "power issues" turns out to be USB3 RF interference. This ONLY occurs for USB3 + 2.4Ghz connections. The symptom is that the 2.4Ghz wireless network will either not be visible, or will drop back to hotspot as soon as USB3 is detected (boot time or at cable reconfig). Pi4 is an almost perfect 2.4Ghz wireless self-jamming device due to having its USB3 ports and HDMI ports in close proximity to the wifi antenna (top of board near GPIO pins 1-6). Poor shielding (cables and connectors) can magnifiy the issue, but even good cables won't eliminate the problem. Some particular Pi4 casings can help (better grounding), others will hurt. Cable lengths and device distances also factor in the RF interference @ 2.4Ghz. Too many variables! Many have responded to my prior posts that their Pi4 setups work fine. I believe those Pi4s that ARE working are not using USB3 + 2.4Ghz wireless networking (or fortune has smiled on them greatly). That said, the Pi4 + USB3 CAN work great under certain circumstances:
- Pi4 + USB3 + 5Ghz wireless should be fine.
- Pi4 + USB3 + hard wired (cable) Ethernet is ok
- Pi4 + USB3 + blind hotspot is ok (i.e. NOT mapped back to a 2.4Ghz "infrastructure" internet source).
- Very curiously, I can most often get stable USB3 with 2.4Ghz AFTER booting with USB2 (i.e. cableup USB2 port, boot, then move cable to USB3 after ~minute).
Note:
- Pi4 + USB2 + 2.4Ghz wireless (+ Powered USB3 hub in downgrade USB2 mode) works fine.

What will NOT consistently boot is Pi4 + USB3 + 2.4Ghz wireless. I recently found the Intel white paper on this general issue from years ago. Fits my symptoms exactly. Here's the link:
www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products...erference-paper.html
USB3 RF interference @2.4Ghz is the problem. RF interference @2.4Ghz also occurs for HDMI, Bluetooth, and even a particular screen resolution! Looking back now at many forum posts (here and in the Raspberry Pi forum), where Pi4 + USB3 + 2.4Ghz odd networking issues occur, these may have a (known or unknown) underlying RF interference factor.

So, Pi4 + USB3 is great (more memory, faster CPU, USB3 allows 10X read/write performance gain and SSD longevity benefits over SD). Just be wary of USB3, bluetooth, and HDMI with 2.4Ghz wireless. I tried multiple different twisted/shielded USB3 cables and carefully mapped out all power (to eliminate this as a possible issue). The Pi4 design itself is part of the problem...not their fault...just hard to have HDMI, USB3, and wireless using 2.4Ghz in close proximity. In the end, for my use, I will add an Ethernet cable to retain a USB3/network speed advantage. If you're trying to stay wireless with USB3, be prepared to need 5Ghz, or stay with blind hotspot mode(which requires off-line platesolving and image transfers via cable or sneaker-net). Hope this helps someone. Cheers all....
