Indi1.8.2 conflict with oacapture1.6.0 - by: ecloud

Since 1.8.2 indi-full has changed its structure of 3rd party drivers. All the package have new names.
While oacapture is dependent on old packages like libasicamera and libefwfilter which are replaced by new packages in indi1.8.2.
So this cause the conflict.
The oacapture deb can be installed with 'dpkg -i --ignore-depends=libasicamera,libefwfilter', and does work good.
I have mail to the author of oacapture, james, but no response by now.
This is a reminder for the people who want to install oacapture on you system.
To solve the conflict, you need to uninstall all the oacapture packages before you upgrade indi to the latest build. Install oacapture again with the ignore option
And also, you need to modify a file to change the oacapture dependency.
/var/lib/dpkg/status
Find oacapture section and remove libasicamera and libefwfilter in the line 'Depends'.

New Pentax Driver Testing - by: karlrees

Since the current Pentax (gphoto2) driver in Indi is almost entirely useless (at least for my camera), I've been working on a new Pentax driver using the Ricoh Camera SDK. I think I'm at a point where it's ready for testing.

Here's the highlights:

- The SDK *officially* supports the Pentax K-1, Pentax K-1 Mark II, Pentax KP, and Pentax 645Z. However, it also supports other unlisted cameras, such as the Pentax K-70 I have been testing with. Please let me know if it works for other models as well.
- The camera must be in PTP mode (i.e. opposite of gphoto2).
- Live View works, at least for the K-70.
- Driver supports whatever pre-defined shutter speeds, ISO settings, etc. are available in your current Exposure Program (so typically set to Manual).
- Allows selection of image resolution (by changing the quality).
- Bulb mode does not work, at least not for the K-70. So the maximum exposure is 30 seconds.

Code is in my fork:

github.com/karlrees/indi-3rdparty

The driver is indi-pentax, and you need to build/install libpentax as well. This is my first original driver for Indi, and quite frankly the most coding I've done in a long time. So I'm bound to be doing something wrong, and I appreciate any feedback.

Also, I'm curious to see what the demand is for bringing in pktriggercord into the mix. The basic idea is that the driver would use the Ricoh SDK if the camera is in PTP mode, and switch to pktriggercord when the camera is in MSC. The main advantages to the pktriggercord mode would be (theoretically): 1) bulb mode / arbitrary exposure length support; and 2) possibly wider camera support. However, pktriggercord does not support live view, and from my initial testing appears to be somewhat slower and perhaps a bit less reliable.

Frames are not downloading with QHY367C - by: tompfe

Hi

I have the following devices connected to my MacBook Pro (with macOS Catalina):
- Astro-Physics Mount connected to INDI (USB-Serial)
- Focuslynx connected to INDI (USB-Serial)
- QHY367C connected to INDI (USB)
- QHY5-IIL connected to INDO (USB)
All devices are connected to two USB hubs which are connected to the Mac's Thunderbolt 3 connectors.

Starting Ekos is fine but then connecting the devices is always a bit of a lottery. The mount mostly is connected immediately, the focuser doesn't connect since a few days (but this is not the problem of this topic), the QHY5II-L connects mostly without problems, but the QHY367C makes problems. I usually have to disconnect the devices, restart Ekos and connect again. In 1 out of 10 tries, the QHY367C is connecting successfully.

I did not find a pattern to connected the QHY367C correctly. I assume it is a matter of where the camera is connected (on which USB Hub, with which other devices on the same hub), but as said, I didn't find a pattern yet.

The last two nights I have run into a new problem. Besides the usual connection problems, I cannot download anymore frames from the QHY367C. I took a 1s frame, the remaining exposure time field counted down to zero, the spinner next to the remaining exposure time doesn't stop spinning and the frame is not downloading. The FITS viewer never opens.
In the attached log file you see the log entries for the QHY367C. Theres is a message "Exposure timeout. Restarting exposure..." which points to the problem but I have no idea what creates the problem and how to solve it.
I noticed that as soon as I unplug the USB cable from the QHY376C, the FITS viewer opens immediately and the frame is displayed.

Does someone else has a similar problem and found a solution for it?

Thomas

HEQ5 no-go with EQdir, only with PC Direct + handset... any ideas? - by: rserpell

Hi everyone,
Sorry cause what follows is long, this little nightmares usually are...

I'm using a Raspberry Pi 4 to control a mount (Skywatcher HEQ5 pro) and two cameras (ASI 1600mm pro and ASI 120MM) over VNC (using Astroberry). The cameras are connected directly to the USB ports of the Raspberry and until recently I was using a USB to serial TTL converter to connect to the mount via the handcontroller (USB-TTL adapter -> DB9-RJ11 cable -> hand-controller -> mount). I had to try a couple of USB to serial adapters until I found one that worked (based on FTDI 232RL, this one ).

Unfortunately, connected as such I experienced two problems:
1- Guiding seemed erratic, particularly in DEC, sometimes jumping several arcseconds when only a small correction was due. After ironing out as much backlash as possible and seeing no improvement I decided to try guiding through the ST4 port instead of EQMod... It worked perfect! (and does it every time, no jumps, totally predictable, 0.55 asec RMS in RA, 0.45 RMS in DEC over 20 minutes).
2- Every now and then, pointing anywhere at the sky, INDI would complain briefly that the scope is out of limits (!). Other times it will disconnect out of the blue. This made guiding impossible even if using the ST4 port because upon reconnecting the driver would not activate tracking by itself.

I took this as a clear sign that I was better removing the hand-controller of the equation. I took the DB9 plug of my old cable and used one half of a CAT5 cable with its RJ45 plug to make a DB9 to RJ45 cable 1 meter long (following the pin-out shown on several websites). First try into the motor controller port: no go, nothing. Raspberry sees the adapter, adds device (ttyUSB0, as before), EQMod driver detects it, but no communication. I tried reversing TX and RX leads. Nothing. I thought maybe the adapter defaults to 3.3v levels and inexplicable that is enough for the hand-controller but not for the motor controller.

Bought me a FTDI 232RL breakout board (the kind that has a jumper to switch between 3.3v or 5v levels, like this one ). This time, before soldering anything I used a breadboard to provide temporary connections from the FTDI to another half of a CAT5 cable and try the setup. It worked! But: the motions lagged the commands significantly, most goto's would take several iterations to get to the target and the driver kept randomly complaining that the scope was out of limits. I thought (hoped) this was due to the bad quality of the connections provided by the breadboard as it hanged from the mount. I soldered the new FTDI adapter and CAT5 cable to make a definitive EQdir interface. In addition to not requiring the DB9 connection in between, given that the FTDI breakout is connected by a USB cable to the Raspberry, I cut the CAT5 cable to less than 10 cm so most of the new cable is a USB cord.

Unfortunately, this didn't work better. Connection was unstable, goto's were unpredictable, warnings all over the place. I left the mount unattended for 5 minutes and had to run back to it in horror when I heard the sound of the gears skipping as the scope was hitting the tripod :pinch: .

I rebuilt the DB9-RJ11 cable to try and use it as before. Also used it to update the hand-controller firmware from 3.39.05 to 3.39.10 (update that initially failed of course...).

I have attached two logs to this message, both from earlier today. The first is using the PC Direct mode, the second is using the FTDI 232RL to RJ45 cable. Now, I don't know if this is a coincidence or not, but today I was unable to observe any warnings using the PC Direct mode (this is after the firmware update). The log of the FTDI to RJ45 cable on the other hand is plagued by "read errors".

I'm puzzled...
- Would my problems be fixed if I go and buy a ready-made EQdir cable?
- Why does the USB to serial adapter work when used through the hand-controller and not when used to communicate directly with the motor controller?
- Is the motor controller of my mount the source of the communication problems? (but then, why would it work when driven by the hand-controller?)
- Faulty FTDI breakout board?

What do you think?

All the best,
Ricardo

Re:HEQ5 Mount STOPS Tracking and K-Stars Rendomly shuts down - by: NewfieStargazer

I am a fairly new used of K-Stars and Ekos and like it very much. I have, however have a recurrent issue that is causing pause for thought. I am running a RaspberryPi 4 with 4GB RAM and the latest build of Astroberry. I am controlling this remotely via K-Stars on my Laptop. Everything is working as expected, however during several nights now my HEQ5 mount randomly stops tracking. I believed that it may have been due to power supply issues, however this behaviour continued despite trying several different power supplies. I also thought that it could be R/T the power connector on the mount, however I again ruled this out by modifying the mount with a more sturdy PS connection. I really want to continue to use this set up, however it is useless if the tracking continues to randomly stop.

A second issue I have noted is that K-Stars will randomly shut down without any warning on the PC that I am using to control the RaspberryPi.

Can anyone help in this manor? I do not know if I have logs that can help, as I am new to this...perhaps hey are there and I just don't know where to look for them.

Highlight "Chosen" Star in Polar Alignment Tool - by: NewfieStargazer

I think it would be a good idea to have some form of identification marker highlight the users "chosen" bright star during the polar alignment, so that it is more easily recognizable. It can be easy to forget which star you are suppose to be moving towards the target, especially if there are large movements of the mount when adjusting the Alt/Az bolts on the mount.

Installation KStars/Ekos Windows8 problem - by: Astrofriend

Hi,
I got KStars/Ekos running on my stationary Windows10 computer, works perfectly fine.

Now I also want to install KStars/Ekos on my Laptop Windows8.

First I got a warning that I missing the driver api-ms-win-crt-math-l1-1-0.

I updated the Windows8 but still it missing this DLL file, how it come ?

I downloaded both 32 and 64 bit drivers and store them in respective system folder.

After that I get a new warning, it could not start the programme correct and the error code '0xc000007b', something about over loading the computer when starting dll files.

I'm sure it has something to do with that I installed the math driver files manually, but how to instead when windows update don't do it ?

Beginning checklist procedure - by: alalal

Hio there
I'm running RP4 with Stellarmate OS and hoping to get out tonight for the 1st time.
I've watched the official tutorials but there are still some gaps in my knowledge....
Could someone help me make a procedure please?

1, Connect equipment - HEQ5 Pro, Canon DSLR, ALtair GuideCam on OAG, 200p telescope
I cannot find the video for how to setup the OAG - I had it weeks ago but cannot see it.
2 Polar alignment!?
3 Platesolve?

I dont understand how I go from connecting everything to getting the mount to point to targets in the sky. Start in park position and polar align? After polar align the mount should have a rough idea where targets are then you plate solve for finer detail?

Im sorry I know this is basic but its gaps in my knowledge...

Any help really appreciated

Driver for Realtek WiFi Adapter..... - by: AstroNerd

Hi all,
Have just bagged myself a new 5ghz WiFi dongle for my rpi4, yes I know it already supports that but the internal one is very weak on 5ghz, it is supposed to work on Linux and rpi, yet I can’t find a driver that does work, it’s based on the RTL8821 BU chipset, and there are many drivers on git hub but none of them work with the latest raspbian kernel....
Does anyone have any ideas...
Thanks :)

Canon T2i captures green image, but live view works - by: bensinc

I'm having trouble putting together a new setup with a Raspberry Pi and a T2i, controlled by KStars under MacOS. It connects fine, but when I try to do a single capture it just gives me a green image. It will show the live feed just fine however.

I've tried a bunch of different settings, capturing in fits or raw, saving to memory, sd card, local, etc, and I'm pretty sure I setup the sensor size and pixel size.

Does anyone know what I might check on this one? Thanks!

Passwords and Security - by: gilesco

Is there a quick document on firming up the security of the Astroberry system like a set of instructions to change the passwords for all components (login, VNC anywhere else?) and perhaps setting up insecure ports to be only available via localhost so that they can be tunnelled via ssh from the desktop?

Also, I tend to login via ssh and would like to use my own username, as typing "astroberry@" all the time is a right pain. Will future updates to the Astroberry perhaps cause problems for me if I am not logging in as the Astroberry user? (it would be nice if everything is independent of the Astroberry user), I know for instance that indiwebmanager and novnc appear to run under that user. Perhaps instructions on what groups a custom user needs to be a member of for everything to work.

Perhaps one for the FAQ on Github?

Hoping for clear skies soon.

Mount park detection system - how? - by: universalmaster

Hi!

I'm trying to automate the observatory and I think the roof is working ok now and it seems to work also with ekos weather system. Here I am using an all-sky camera to just count starts and report bad weather if I see too few stars. All seems ok. I'm using a RPI 3 for ekos and kstars, but hopefully I can move to RPI 4 when Ubuntu starts stabilizing.

Now, my problem is that I can only physically close the roof if the mount is truly in it's parked position, otherwise the roof will hit the scope. The parked position is with the telescope to the west and pointing slightly downwards. The mount is an old eq6 fitted with synscan upgrade and controlled using eqmod.

My fear is, that something goes wrong with the mount and it is not truly parked, e.g. because it have bumped into the pier instead.

Any good ideas on how to design a reliable sensor system that will tell me if the mount succeeded in parking or not? I'm not a sensor wizard, so no idea what to look for. Programming it will be no problem....

Best regards
Søren

Frustration !!!! - by: Gonzothegreat

So this evening, with just a couple of hours of clear night I got my new QH5L-II-M camera setup, so much more sensitive than the original QHY5.
Now, the frustrating part...
<strong>The ATIK 314 no longer works.
Unable to solve anything, local or remote (astrometry)
</strong>

I spend more time fixing stuff and getting annoyed than taking any astro pictures, really really does my head in.
And yes everything is up2date to this day, server and client. No I do not have a log file, clouds rolled in now. I have to wait another 2 months until I'm back here now.

root@heidenrod-obs:/home/heidenrod# dpkg -l | grep atik
ii indi-atik 2.4~201911160020~ubuntu18.04.1 armhf INDI Driver for Atik cameras and filter wheels.
ii libatik 2.2.6~201911071658~ubuntu18.04.1 armhf Library for Atik Cameras.
root@heidenrod-obs:/home/heidenrod#

root@heidenrod-obs:/home/heidenrod# dpkg -l | grep libindi
ii libindi-data 1.8.2~201911200846~ubuntu18.04.1 all Instrument-Neutral Device Interface library -- shared data
ii libindi-dev 1.8.2~201911200846~ubuntu18.04.1 armhf Instrument-Neutral Device Interface library -- development files
ii libindi1:armhf 1.8.2~201911200846~ubuntu18.04.1 armhf Instrument-Neutral Device Interface library -- shared library
root@heidenrod-obs:/home/heidenrod#

This is what I get with the Atik, no matter which exposure I use.

Help needed for INDI client development - by: wbirk

hi!
i wrote a little client that reads images from cameras using INDI - and as i want to refine this a little bit, I have a few questions:
- where can i find driver specific properties that go beyond the standard ones from indilib.org/develop/developer-manual/101...dard-properties.html ?
for instance: i can get 8 or 16 bit data from ZWO cameras, but how can i set the bit depth in the code? (i assume it is a switch, but what are the properties?)

- and: how can i get more details on the way the raw data are represented aside from using fitsio to analyze the incoming data blob?

HEQ5 Mount STOPS Tracking and K-Stars Rendomly shuts down - by: NewfieStargazer

ZWO 8 Position Filter Wheel - by: NewfieStargazer

Just wondering why I am unable to assign filters to slots 6-8 on my ZWO 8 position filter wheel? I am running K-Stars/Ekos on Astroberry and only have the option for 5 slots on the filter wheel, despite it being an 8 position wheel, and being able to move through all eight positions.

Indiduino MeteoStation trouble with TSL2591 - by: porkyhttp

Hi,
I am tring to build my Meteostation, but i have much problem with the TSL2591. I see that values are not stable and change to much from one to other, in the same conditions. If i compare these values with an Unihedron SQM device, the values from the Unihedron device is the same or change of 0.02 but values that came out from the TSL2591 are completily different. Wht these difference??? Someone has compared the values from a TSL2591 with an Unihedron???
